PictureWinnie (Jennifer Hudson) and Nelson Mandela (Terence Howard)
With the anticipation growing daily for the forthcoming film 'Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom' (based on Nelson Mandela's autobiography) and starring Idris Elba as the South African leader, now comes a very interesting development. Another Mandela film will shortly be released, this time however looking at his ex wife. Simply titled 'Winnie Mandela', Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson plays the title role and Terence Howard (soon to be seen in 'Lee Daniel's The Butler') portrays Nelson. In real life Winnie was not long married to the anti-apartheid revolutionary when he was arrested and jailed in 1962 for his political beliefs. During these troubling times she was actually imprisoned for 500 days, mainly in solitary confinement. Though the subject matter should be similar to 'Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom', I can only assume this film's story will be told through Winnie's eyes and experiences.

'Winnie Mandela' has had a somewhat arduous journey on its way to the screen. Originally made in South Africa in 2010, it was shown in a rough unfinished state at the Toronto Film Festival in 2011. Towards the end of the year there was talk of the film being released in 2012 and there was even a trailer in circulation. It was at this point I found out about the film's existence and proceeded to spread the word. I have since discovered that 'Winnie Mandela' was released for a brief period of time in Canada in October 2012. Since then the prominent African American preacher T.D. Jakes is now involved with the production and it is scheduled to arrive on US screens on 6th September. As usual, my fingers are crossed that not too much time will pass before it reaches the UK. I have yet to see this movie but I have been reliably informed that both Ms Hudson and Mr Howard put in sterling performances and on the strength of the trailer, this definitely appears to be the case.
