A special edition of 'RHYTHM & NEWS' on Crackers Radio with special guest RANDY MULLER!! To many of us funk fans, especially those, like me, who grew up in the 70's, buying and definitely dancing our asses off to those hot, sweaty, funky grooves, one band exploded in 1975 and changed the game! They were called Brass Construction and their leader was a smooth, cool kid coming out of Brooklyn (of Guyanese descent - at least we had that in common!) He not only played several instruments, he also wrote the majority of their material, including the classics, 'Movin' and 'Changin'

For that band alone, we would be singing and praising his name to this day. In front of certain audiences, those classic grooves still bring the house down. However, before BC blasted on the scene, if you were into the sounds of B.T. Express, then chances are you were loving the contributions of Mr Muller. Apart from being a musician, and a songwriter, and a producer, Randy Muller was a top notch arranger, adding those strings to a great many records from several artists, including the band he put together, Skyy.

His career is full to the brim with quality music and he is still doing his thing. It was an absolute joy to finally have Randy sit down with me and have a radio interview. Over here in the UK to do a little pre-promotion for his next album (due out early next year), we got the opportunity to talk one on one and for me it did not disappoint. All I will say say is, if you think you know all the man has done, think again and check this out!    Ok, how does it go again?!! ONE TWO, HA CHA CHA!! TWO, TWO, HA CHA CHA......

Seen by many as the 'unofficial' 2nd album from Brass Construction. Released in 1976, 'Ain't Nothin' But A Party' by Mark Radice was produced by Jeff Lane (BC's producer) and for intent and purposes it felt and sounded like a Brass Construction album. The band were not only the musicians, but were photographed with Radice on the back cover of the album.

'rhythm & News' on crackers radio (aretha franklin tribute) (thurs 16th aug 2018)

Thursday 16th August 2018 will be a date remembered around the world as the day The Queen of Soul, Ms ARETHA FRANKLIN sadly passed on.This incredible artist who was not only a voice for a people, she was also a voice of a movement, she was a once in a lifetime sensation and she sang for everybody. She sang from the heart and she sang from the soul. Truly an angel with a mighty vocal and spiritual strength unmatched.

Even though she had been unwell for quite some time, and even rumours of her dying only a few days before the unthinkable happened, when it did, it shook us all. My own circumstances will stay with me forever. I was driving to the studio to my my usual 3 hour 'Rhythm & News' show when the story broke on my telephone. TMZ saying Aretha had finally left us. I continued driving, though in a slight state of shock. Before I had arrived I had already decided to abandon my usual show, instead deciding I would dedicate the last hour to The Queen of Soul. I also thought there was no way I could begin the show in my usual upbeat very funky manner. So in respect I begin with Aretha. I will not lie, in the beginning I am very shaky (the news still fresh in my mind), at times I'm trying to keep it all together.

So here is the show. Let me point out the entire show is not all sad and somber. As I say on air, we will celebrate her and the musical gems she has left us. This we do.

'rhythm & news' on crackers radio with special guest boston dj serge gamesbourg (thurs 2nd aug 2018)

A special edition of 'RHYTHM & NEWS' on Crackers Radio featuring special guest DJ SERGE GAMESBOURG. This Boston based DJ had only arrived into the UK for the first time ever, a day or two earlier before he came by the studio for our chat on air. In fact we felt quite honoured with his visit as it turned out this was to be his very first UK radio interview. His reputation had presided him as many DJ's and dance music fans of the underground 70's/80's funky flavour became aware of his name due to an album called 'Serge Gamesbourg Presents Boston Goes Disco!', which has just been released on BBE.

Raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Serge was a musician and a DJ. He came upon the idea to put together a compilation album full of obscure (read as very little in the way of sales, if any!) disco, funk, soul and boogie tracks from the local and surrounding area. The irony being all the tracks were hot then....and still are today! Not only did he chase all the music down, getting clearences etc. He went into the studio to add his own touches, producing his own 'Edit' versions. The outcome being a treasure trove of incredible grooves and soulful jams have emerged to an audience who are experiencing them with fresh ears!! Serge talks about the album and we go deep, playing several cuts. As they say....Let's Go Disco!!!  Boston was definitely in da house!!!

A special edition of 'RHYTHM & NEWS' on Crackers Radio featuring special guest ROBB SCOTT, a London born and raised singer, songwriter and musician. This very talented guy really put his money where his mouth was when it came to putting together his excellent album, 'Siren'. With such musical influences as Minnie Riperton, Joni Mitchell, Roy Ayers, Coltrane, Miles, of course Stevie and Marvin, Mr Scott delivered a very rich mix of soul, jazz, funk and more. working on both sides of the Atlantic, enlisting the talents of many great folk, all the while footing the bill, this work indeed needed to be heard.

In terms of full disclosure, it is no secret I came under this album's spell and decided I would help spread the good word. In terms of sheer quality Robb fully delivered on all fronts, the songs, the musicianship, the production, the whole nineyards! Here was something that could be credited as British (although parts of it was recorded in the US), that stands out as worthy of much praise. So it was a great pleasure having the main ( and very cool) man come into the studio to discuss the whole project,

'rhythm & news' on crackers radio with special guest leee john (wed 23rd may 2018)

A special edition of 'RHYTHM & NEWS' on Crackers Radio with special guest LEEE JOHN of IMAGINATION, one of the most successful soul bands in the UK. The singer and musician (seen by many as "one of the hardest working men in showbusiness") and his group first tasted success bringing their distinctive, sultry soulful flavour to the masses in the early 80's and he has not stopped making music and performing ever since! In recent times Leee has taken stock of the dire situation happening in many cities worldwide, namely youth crime and the senseless killings and violence associated with it and decided to make his own contribution towards the solution to this social madness, putting together an anti youth crime campaign. To spearhead this venture he released his own version of the 1976 reggae classic 'Police & Thieves' (originally recorded by Junior Murvin), and even went as far as enlisting the Godfather of UK Reggae, Dennis Bovell to produce the recording.

Leee came into the studio to discuss the campaign, but as anyone who knows this gentleman can tell you, he can be quite a character and extremely entertaining, so you can rest assured the tone of the interview included many moments of mayhem and merriment.

A special edition of 'RHYTHM & NEWS' on Crackers Radio featuring an interview with London born and bred (and very proud of it!), fashion and style guru, author, DJ and musician BARRIE SHARPE. Known far and wide for his no nonsense approach and his deep dedication to fashion and music, especially on the funky end, to many he is the archetype 'London soul boy'. His much varied career has crossed many influential people, including Godfather of Soul, James Brown's right hand man Bobby Byrd. for whom Sharpe worked as his DJ in Japan. The main man came on the show to talk about his newly released album project, #1, by RHYTHM RHYME REVOLUTION (a collaboration between himself and musician Gareth Tasker) and we learned a lot more. The funky grooves reigned supreme as Barrie told it like it is, warts and all!
